'Baby' boomers are re-careering - with the help of the Boomerznz Bureau

As you’ve probably heard, many of the generation collectively known as ‘baby’ boomers (people born after 1946) aren’t planning to retire any time soon.  You might think that, with many decades of work behind them, most boomers would be keen to take the rest of their lives off. But more than two-thirds of boomers think otherwise, according to recent research. A small percentage (13%) need to continue working because their retirement savings are insufficient; but for most it’s all about the intellectual challenge, the need to remain productive, the need for personal interaction with others or the desire to avoid retiring and becoming bored. Too much time, too little to do

It seems that these boomer workaholics can be divided into three broad categories:

  • Those who have the financial security to retire but don't want to leave a job they love.
  • Those who keep working due to inertia -- they don't know what else to do, so they just keep showing up for work.
  • Then there are those who keep working but leave their previous occupations behind in order to pursue a whole new career path – the analysts call it re-careering.

So why re-career? The reasons are diverse. For some, it’s a chance to pursue a lifelong passion, the opportunity to make a real difference in the world. For others, they’re finally able to change their focus – their children are off their hands, daily financial pressures have eased and they can now look for a job they like rather than settle for one that pays the bills. For still others, re-careering provides an opportunity for a new life as a consultant or to become self-employed, enjoying new freedoms.

In every case, however, each boomer brings a lifetime set of skills to his or her new career – achievements and expertise hard-won in one working life that will enrich their new vocation. As a result, enlightened employers are broadening their candidate evaluation processes, looking at skill sets and abilities rather than specific industry experience. And boomer candidates are being advised to revisit their CVs, identifying the broader implications of their specific experience and how that might translate into transferrable skills appropriate across a range of possible occupations.

Re-careering does require a change of emphasis for both employer and potential employee – but the payoff can be mutually advantageous for both.
